Lights Out!
In the dim hush of the dark ages, when light was a rare and fragile gift, the grid before you is a map of hidden glows and lurking shadows.
Some cells cradle secret sources of light, while others remain empty and cold. When a cell is revealed, it shows a number, a faint measure of how much illumination has reached it , for every spark, flame, or glow that touches the square leaves its mark. At times, lights overlap, weaving their brightness together, so that a single place may shine with the strength of many.
Your task is to trace these patterns in the gloom, to uncover the safe stones where no light hides or to mark the secret places where the hidden flames dwell.
Yet tread carefully!...
For disturbing any source will plunge your path back into darkness.
Among the hidden lights are the sparks, faint and fleeting glimmers that scarcely hold back the dark. They burn with no steady flame, casting only the softest glow upon the stones around them.
Stronger than a spark yet bound by strange restraint, the flames burn in narrow paths, either stretching across a row or climbing along a column. Their glow, though steady, remains as dim as that of a spark, and so each cell they touch is lit with only the faintest shimmer. Curiously, their light is stubborn and unwilling to bendβit does not spill into the stones that lie close beside them, nor does it soften the darkness of neighboring spaces beyond their chosen line. A flame is a torch set upon a single path, bright enough to trace its course across the board, yet blind to all else around it.
Deeper in the darkness lie the glows, steady orbs of light whose reach is neither endless nor feeble. Unlike flames, a glow spills outward in all directions, touching the stones around it with a gentle radiance. Yet its gift is finite: no cell more than two steps away will ever feel its warmth, for beyond that small circle the night presses close once more. Within their span, however, the glows weave patterns of overlapping light, soft halos that mingle and strengthen where they meet. To find them is to uncover the hidden hearts of the board, those rare lanterns whose power shapes the very map of shadow and shine.
To wander safely through the gloom, you must learn the old gestures of seekers past.
With a single touch, you may lift the veil from a cell, revealing whether it lies in shadow or touched by light.
Yet a surer hand is needed when you suspect a hidden source: strike the stone twice in quick succession, and you may mark it, binding it with a sign so you will not forget its danger or its glow.
When doubt clouds your path, call upon the hint β a rare gift that parts the darkness for but a moment, guiding your eyes to a safe step or uncovering the nature of a hidden light.
And should your journey falter, you hold the power to begin anew, either by retracing the very same path of shadows and sparks, or by summoning a fresh field, where light and dark are scattered in new patterns, waiting once more to be unveiled...
